Pre-registration for the 9th Biennial Urban History Association Conference is now closed. The conference will take place 18-21 October 2018 in Columbia, South Carolina at the University of South Carolina Alumni Center (900 Senate Street) and the Hilton Columbia Center (924 Senate Street) directly next door. On-site registration will be available on: Thursday, October 18th from 12 PM - 5 PM; Friday, October 19th from 7:30 AM - 4 PM; and Saturday, October 20th from 7:30 AM - 4 PM.

Please read the information below carefully and register as soon as possible.  The names of conference participants will not appear on the final program until they have officially registered for the conference.  The schedule for conference registration is:

**On-site conference registration for College Students is $10 for one day, and $15 for two or more days.

Registration refunds: before 18 August 2018 – 100% refund; 18 August-26 September 2018 – 50% refund; After 26 September 2018 – no refund.

Banquet and Receptions

There are three receptions and a banquet scheduled. Tickets are required for all these events (and can be reserved online during the registration process). The receptions are free for all registered conference attendees; the banquet has an additional fee. Please be sure to respond as quickly as possible to reserve a ticket for your attendance for these events.

A reception on Thursday evening, 18 October will be held at the University of South Carolina’s President’s House. A reception immediately preceding the conference banquet will be held at Hunter-Gatherer Brewery at the Curtis-Wright Hangar on Friday evening, 19 October. The conference banquet will follow on Friday, 19 October at City Roots restaurant/urban farm (across the street from the Hunter-Gatherer Brewery reception). A reception on Saturday evening, 20 October will be held at the Richland Library immediately following a late afternoon plenary session at the library.

Hotel Accommodations

A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Hilton Columbia Center (one of the conference sites) as well as at the Hampton Inn Columbia – Downtown Historic District, which is one block away. The conference rate at the Hilton Columbia Center is $154 per night and is $149 per night (breakfast included) at the Hampton Inn Columbia. UHA participants are encouraged to make reservations or other accommodations as soon as possible.

Air Travel Information and Advice

The Columbia airport has direct flights to many major domestic airports, but for those travelling to the conference from cities without such direct flights there are alternatives which may provide competitive price and travel time options. One option is to fly into Charlotte and either take a popular private shuttle service to Columbia (Columbia Charlotte Shuttle: or else rent a car. (Please note that because of University of South Carolina students returning from fall break, Columbia Charlotte Shuttle is anticipating very heavy business during our conference and expects to sell out their shuttles, so it is recommended that you book shuttle reservations as early as possible in order to ensure a spot.) The Charleston, Greenville, and Augusta, GA airports are also viable options for those renting cars.

Raymond A. Mohl Graduate Student Paper Prize

The Urban History Association, in partnership with the Journal of Urban History, is pleased to announce the Raymond A. Mohl Award for the best graduate student paper presented at the Ninth Biennial Conference of the Urban History Association in Columbia, South Carolina. Full-time students presenting at the conference are encouraged to submit their paper to the prize committee by September 4, 2018. The author of the winning paper will receive (1) recognition and a cash award of $150, which will be presented during the conference; and (2) an invitation to submit the award-winner manuscript to the Journal of Urban History for review for publication.
